#HASHTAGS
Everyone's seen hashtags (words preceded by the # symbol) in their social media feed, but how do you make them work for you?
what's a hashtag?
Hashtags are user-generated, dynamic metadata tags. They help other users easily find messages with a specific theme or content. Searching for a hashtag yields each message that someone has tagged with it.
It's easy to create a hashtag by simply adding the # symbol, but less easy to make it meaningful. Any hashtag, if promoted by enough individuals, can "trend" and attract more individual users to discussion.
using hashtags
You could include hashtags relating to your business in every post. Equally, a clever message incorporating a trending hashtag could propel your business into the limelight.
Bear in mind that hastags are organic in nature. As you grow your business, always incorporate the same hashtag and ask your social media followers to share it.
Make sure you use "camel case" in your hastags. This is where you capitalise the initial letter of each word. There are two reasons for this - the first is legibility. #PenIsland could read very differently!! The second is accessibility. Screen readers and our AI companions Siri, Alexa and Cortana can read hashtags incorporating capitals much more easily.
